Check out these methods of preserving your flowers below!
Pressing Your Flowers
One of the most traditional ways to preserve your flowers is by pressing it, which is a relatively simple process. Remember freshness is key! Try choosing flowers that are either still in bud form, or that has freshly bloomed. Once you have selected the flowers you would like to press; you will need to prep them. If you are busy like most, prepping your flowers immediately won’t be ideal, if so place them in a Ziploc bag and store your soon to be beautiful decor in the refrigerator.
Hydrating Your Flowers Before Pressing Them
Once you are ready to press your flowers, there are a few steps to take to ensure your flowers keep their color and freshness:
- To allow maximum water absorption, place the stems under water immediately after cutting. Then, recut the flower stems at an angle.
- Remove leaves that will be below the waterline in the vase. If left, these leaves will rot and can ultimately create bacteria that shorten the life of a flower.
- You will need only to hydrate your flowers for a few hours. Place your flowers in a clean vase with water and flower food, or a teaspoon of sugar. Keep them cool, in a ventilated place, and out of direct sunlight.
Paper To Use
To press your flowers, you must dry them as quickly as you can to prevent them from browning. There are various types of papers you can use to accomplish this, such as printer paper, flat cardboard, plain non treated facial tissue or even non corrugated coffee filters. Try avoiding paper towels; many have textures that may end up imprinted on the petals you are pressing.
Flower Pressing Using a Book
This is the most popular way of pressing flowers, as it is also the easiest. Choose the most massive book you can get your hands on, such as a dictionary or phone book. Use a book you don't mind damaging because the moisture being absorbed will cause the pages to wrinkle. So let's get started!
- Place your flower between two pieces of paper, and place them within the pages of the book. Depending on the size of the book, you can range from pressing one flower to multiple flowers at the same time. If you do decide to press many flowers, be sure to space them out so that the moisture from one flower doesn’t transfer to another.
- While closing your book be sure not to disturb the arrangement of flowers. Once closed, try using more books, or maybe bricks to weigh down the book.
- After two or three weeks, the flowers should be dehydrated. Try removing the flowers with a pair of tweezers, or use your fingers very carefully. Dehydrated flowers are incredibly delicate.
